Description:

DOE intends to provide financial support for thedevelopment of small wind turbine technology, under the provisions of theEnergy Policy Act (EPAct) of 1992. The low wind speed, small wind turbinedevelopment activities are planned as grants to industry, and guided byseveral principles: 1) supporting industry in the innovation of small windtechnology; 2) aligning DOE?s Wind Program research and testing activitiesto support small turbine research; 3) continuous coordination of theresulting projects and related supporting research to guide programportfolio planning and technology transfer; and 4) use of regular projectreviews and analytical metrics for assessing performance, continuedapplicability of the research, and funding.Under this Funding Opportunity Announcement, DOE is soliciting Applicationsfor small wind turbine component development that demonstrate the potentialfor improvements in cost, reliability, and performance in grid-connectedapplications at low wind speed regimes. For purposes of this FundingOpportunity Announcement, low wind speeds are defined as Class 3 (averageof 5.35 m/s at an elevation of 10 meters above ground level) and small windturbines are defined as turbines of 100 kilowatts or less.
